Dr. Rick C. Walters Memorial
Dr. Rick C. Walters Memorial Scholarship
Rick graduated from Hughesville High School in 1976. He was a varsity wrestler and a letter winner for three years. After high school he attended and graduated from Clarion University in 1980 with a degree in biology. He started working in the laboratory at American Home Foods while working on his master’s degree at Bloomsburg University. Not long after that, Rick decided to go in a different direction. He applied to Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia and was accepted. Among his highlights while at optometry school were his experiences helping the people of the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota and the people in the poor, small villages of Mexico. He graduated from Pennsylvania School of Optometry in 1990. Upon graduation, he then went to work for Dr. Garone in Palmerton, Pennsylvania, and eventually bought the entire practice when Dr. Garone retired. Rick never charged his family, friends, and people in need for his services. He always said that for kids who needed glasses and couldn’t afford them, “I am here for them.”
In his spare time, he took classes at the local community college just to keep learning. He was a great math student but still took math classes later in life. History and Civil War classes were two of his favorites. Sadly, Rick died March 26, 2015, after a nearly two-year battle with glioblastoma (brain cancer). He left behind his wife, daughter, parents, sister, and nephews. This yearly $1,000 scholarship is for anyone graduating from East Lycoming School District who intends to further his or her education in the medical field.
